About Cheney
Cheney is located in Spokane County, Washington. Cheney is a tourist unique community with a vivid history. The city was incorporated in 1883 and it was named after Benjamin Pierce Cheney, founder of Great Northern Railroad. Cheney developed a lot thanks to its education, rail, and agriculture.
Although Cheney is a small city with a population of 17600, it is home for a public regional university, the Eastern Washington University. Cheney offers many outdoor activities: swimming in an outdoor swimming pool, tennis that can be practiced in many tennis courts, soccer, and baseball.
Twenty miles from Cheney you can admire the lakes with their offer of recreational opportunities such as boating, swimming, water skiing and fishing. The lakes include: Fish Lake, Badger Lake, Williams Lake, Chapman Lake, Silver Lake, Clear Lake, Medical Lake, West Medical Lake, Amber Lake, Spokane River, and Little Spokane River.
Cheney has seven well maintained public parks where tourists can relax at a picnic or a barbecue, play soccer, tennis, volleyball, ride horses, watch movies: City Park, Centennial Park, Hagelin Park, Hibbard Park, Moos Field, Salnave Park and Sutton Park. 5 miles northwest from Cheney is located Fairway's Golf Course where the golf amateurs can play their favorite sport. 5 miles South of Cheney is Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is located in the "Channeled Scablands", an area formed by glacial floods at the end of the last ice age. Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge offers breeding and nesting grounds for migratory birds and hiking trails and a motorized trail for viewing wildlife areas for tourists.
10 miles east of Cheney at Riverside State Park whitewater rafting, kayaking, hiking and rock climbing are the most frequent activities. Nearby there are four different local ski areas: Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park, 49 Degrees North, Schweitzer Mountain and Silver Mountain, Idaho where snow skiing can be practiced.
